.. 2024 - SPD OFFICER MICHAEL JENSEN & OCSD LT MICHAEL HOOSOCK

-
From the Syracuse Post Standard - "Two law enforcement officers were killed Sunday night in a shootout on a suburban street in Salina. A Syracuse police officer and an Onondaga County Sheriff's deputy were both killed when they went to followup on a traffic stop where the driver sped away. At a news conference Monday afternoon, authorities said Syracuse police officer Michael Jensen and sheriff's Lt Michael Hoosock died from injuries they suffered in a hail of gunfire. The trouble started with a traffic stop at 7pm in the city's Tipp Hill neighborhood. That's when Syracuse police tried to pull over a car but the driver refused and sped off. Police took the plate number which led them to a home on Darien Drive in Town of Salina.
-
- There police saw guns in the back of the car and then from inside the house they heard the sound of a gun being readied to fire. Gunfire filled the neighborhood as the officers and the suspect exchanged shots. Hoosock was in the backyard of the home when he was shot and killed. Jensen was killed after the gunman moved in to the front yard and confronted the Syracuse officers stationed there. The two officers and the suspect were killed."

Officer Kelsey Francemone heard multiple gunshots originating from disorderly crowd of several hundred gathered at a large party nearby. She ran toward the direction of the gunshots as panicked people streamed in the opposite direction, and confronted an armed man, who was firing a handgun at other individuals in the crowd. Francemone ordered the individual to drop his weapon. When he didn't comply with her direction, she shot him once, wounding him. The man dropped his weapon and fled around a corner of a building.
-
- When she attempted secure the scene and locate the injured man, she was encircled by the crowd, members of which began to physically attack her, by punches and kicks, her uniform was ripped by individuals attempting to take her badge and service weapon. Francemone defended herself throughout the attack, refusing to relinquish either item.
-
- Officers responding to the scene pulled their colleague from the melee, but were mobbed by the unruly crowd. The ensuing riot prompted Syracuse Police to seek mutual aid from police agencies throughout Onondaga County. After the incident was under control, investigators later recovered nearly 40 shell casings from the scene and estimated there were roughly a half-dozen gunmen firing weapons in the officers' proximity. The suspect Gary Porter died from the gunshot.

2009 - TYSON SHOOTING

- April 13, 2009, SPD Detectives Richard Curran and Edward Falkowski, were searching for James Tyson Jr who was wanted on a stolen 357 magnum weapon charge. They spotted him driving along a southside street and pulled him over. Tyson, instead of following the Detectives instructions to exit his car & put his hands on top of his auto, made a conscious decision that he was not going back to jail and reached for his gun.
-
- Curran and Falkowski struggled with Tyson for control of the weapon. The first shot from Tyson’s 357 handgun happened next to Falkowski’s head. Falkowski fell to the ground. Falkowski, convinced that he had been wounded in the left side of his head, yelled to Curran that he had been shot. Curran while heading toward cover behind a vehicle was shot in the back and shoulder. Both luckily into his vest.
-
- Meanwhile, Falkowski was lying where he fell and Tyson was standing over him just a few feet away firing at Curran. Falkowski drew his pistol, aimed at Tyson and pulled the trigger. It jammed. Curran, behind a vehicle, started returning fire. Tyson fled, running through a parking lot and east on Walrath Avenue. Falkowski began chasing while working the slide on his gun to free the jammed cartridge and insert a new round. Tyson fired over his shoulder at Falkowski as he ran. Curran said "I could see Tyson still running with the gun in his hand and I could hear Falkowski returning fire. I also was returning fire and I shot several additional rounds at Tyson".
-
Falkowski kept after Tyson and Tyson stopped, turned and pointed his gun at Falkowski from about 20 to 25 feet away. Falkowski continued to advance on Tyson and fired multiple shots. Falkowski said, "Tyson stumbled backward with the handgun still in his hand. Tyson threw the handgun in my direction and it went over my left shoulder and landed somewhere behind me." Both detectives were sent by ambulance to the hospital. Falkowski suffered a broken ear drum. Curran shot twice into his vest. One penetrating once inch into his back. Tyson also sent to the hospital and pronounced dead, was shot in the left breast, right hip, right arm and right ankle.
-
- Both officers received commendations and Hendricks medal and honored with NAPO's 2010 TOP COP Awards in Washington, D.C.
